What you need to know

Hygge Living

Hygge (pronounced Hue-Gah) comes from Denmark and is attributed to them being the happiest nation on the planet. It is very hard to directly translate. A rough translation would be ‘Cosy’ but it doesn’t come close to encompassing what it is. People connecting and leaving the distractions of the world behind and being present and mindful.

Wildlife

The Galloway Forest has a wide variety of Wildlife. The Dark Sky Dome is regularly visited by the Red Fox, Red Squirrels, Pine Martens, Greater Spotted Wood Peckers, Eurasian Jays, Tawny Owls and a host of other Birds. These can all be watched up close from the comfort of the Dome.

“Sit down. Don’t move. Keep quiet. Wait…10 minutes. I’d be very surprised if something pretty interesting didn’t happen in those 10 minutes. Doing that in a woodland, if you haven’t done it, it’s extraordinary. Don’t get too impatient, either.” David Attenborough

Fully Equipped

Central Heating, Log burner, Fully Fitted Kitchen with 4 ring hob and twin oven, freezer, an enclosed toilet and shower room, Kingsize bed. There are 2 mezzanine nets which are accessed via a spiral staircase.

Midges

The proximity to the biting midge and the wearing of the kilt gave rise to the Highland Fling.

Unfortunately the biting midge in the forest can be of no joke, they can be highly annoying. For 8000 years man has fought the Midge and lost. On sunny days the midges are of no issue and with a breeze over 5mph they are also not a problem. However damp cloudy days and still summer evenings they do come out to feed in their droves. There are many products on the
market to repel them but through experience, the best course of action is covering your skin and use a midge hood or simply retire to the Dome until they move on.

Firepit

The Dome has a large fire pit, perfect for sitting around watching the stars and toasting marshmallows while spinning tales. The Fire pit is deep so as to hide the flames so as not to scare the wildlife. Fire Wood is supplied.

Wood Burning Stove

The Dome is fitted with the most efficient Wood burning stove in the world. The large glass front gives a brilliant flame picture and will keep you entranced for hours. Due to the high efficiency of the stove, there will be no need to empty the ash during your stay (most of it is incinerated). Wood for the stove is provided.

What to bring

Food. The nearest Shop is 5 miles away in the village of Straiton. The shop sells local produce and is worth a look in before you arrive.

Comfy Clothes – For making the most of the Dome it’s best to have comfy clothes for lounging on the nets or bean bags and some cosy socks or slippers as the Dome has a shoes off at the door policy.

If you plan to go local walks and hikes stout foot wear is recommended. The weather can be very changeable so it’s best to come prepared for all weathers, as Billy Connolly says ‘there is no such thing as bad weather only the wrong clothing, so get yourself a sexy little raincoat and live a little’
